Start of Student Teaching!

As much as I try to blog at least once (my goal is twice) a week, it seems like that hasn’t been happening lately.  Sometimes life gets busy.

My college has three terms instead of two semesters- two are 12 weeks and the third, in the spring, is just 6 weeks.  Last week was the first week of Term III- one week down, four and a half to go!  I’m doing my first student teaching this term.  I’m in a 1st grade class and I’m loving it so far!  I mostly observed last week, but I’ll be taking over the small reading groups this week.  I wasn’t sure how I felt about being placed in first grade, but I’m really enjoying the cute little kids and have been really impressed with how much they already know and can do.

It’s been a bit of a struggle getting used to being up so early in the morning and having a 25-minute commute.  I’ve never had a commute before in my life, so it’s a bit of a new concept for me.  My elementary, middle, and high school are all within a mile of the house I grew up in, so having to make extra time for a drive is definitely different for me.  Thankfully, I am able to carpool with two other student teachers and we’re going to switch off the driving, so at least I’m not driving alone.

I’m excited for this term!  I know it’s going to fly by (if this past week is any indication, at least!).  I’ve learned so much the past week and know that I’m going to learn so much more.  In some ways, 6 weeks seems like a long time, but it’s really such a short amount of time.  I’ll try to continue posting regularly, but if it’s a little silent over here, it’s because I’m busy teaching first graders and completing student teaching assignments.  I hope that spring is warmer wherever you are than here (it snowed on Thursday) and that everything is going well in everyone’s lives!
